2024 Rocky Mountain Slayer Description
The Rocky Mountain Slayer debuted over twenty years ago as a 120mm trail bike. A complete redesign in 2006 made it one of the first purpose-built freeride bikes and it evolved from there. With 180mm of travel and a 62.5° head angle (slack mode), the 2024 Rocky Mountain Slayer is longer, slacker, plusher and feels a lot like a downhill bike from a few years back. The stretched-out geometry and gooey suspension gobble up the steepest, rockiest descents. It pedals pretty damn well for a freeride bike, too. If you’re looking for a gravity rig for the bike park, the old Rampage site or Flying Monkey, you can’t go wrong with the 2024 Rocky Mountain Slayer.
We loved the previous Slayer but the 2024 Slayer is definitely better. Rocky Mountain refined the platform considerably making it into more of a gravity-specific freeride/park bike. When you first see the new Slayer, a few details jump out and let you know this isn’t just another long-travel enduro bike. The 2024 Slayer comes standard with a coil shock, the geometry is noticeably long and slack, and a closer look at the wheels reveals Maxxis Double Down tire casings and Cush Core tire inserts.*
The 2024 Slayer is available in carbon or aluminum and as a mixed-wheel bike (small and medium) or a 29er (large and XL). If you’re a tall rider and prefer a mixed-wheel setup, the large and XL bikes are mullet-compatible. The previous Slayers had an aluminum rear triangle for both carbon and alloy models. For 2024, carbon means carbon from tip to tail. Rocky also added a “PenaltyBox” storage compartment* to the downtube on carbon frames.
For those of you who “only ride park,” Rocky sells a Slayer “Park” model with a 200mm RockShox Boxxer dual crown fork and a slightly slacker 62.3° head angle. If the slack 62.5° head angle is too much, no worries, the Slayer’s RIDE-4 system gives you almost a full degree of adjustment as well as 10mm of bottom bracket range. There’s also a two-position axle dropout that allows you to add or subtract 10mm from the wheelbase. Basically, the RIDE-4 system allows you to fine-tune your bike to the terrain and your personal style of riding.
On the trail, the 2024 Slayer feels buttery-plush and exceptionally stable, smoothing out trail rubble and daring you to stay off the brakes when the terrain gets steeper and rougher. We’ve ridden it on some of the nastiest trails in Southern Utah, including steep, loose black diamond trails at Brian Head, the Grafton DH and big slickrock lines at Church Rocks. Regardless of the trail, the Slayer is confident, poised and tons of fun.
OTE HU retail manager, Pierce Kettering, has been riding the new Slayer a lot and he said: “The Slayer gave me a literal new perspective on steep, janky terrain. It didn’t look or feel as steep or intimidating as on other bikes. It also helped me up my jump game. It doesn’t feel at all bucky off the lip. It’s stable at speed and a surprisingly good pedaler, as well.“
The long, slack geometry, coil shock and Smoothlink suspension really make the Slayer feel like a downhill bike. That’s because it essentially is a downhill bike. Think of it as a shorter travel, more versatile DH bike with a steeper seat tube and more anti-squat so you can pedal, if you want. And, as Pierce said, it pedals surprisingly well. So well, in fact, you might forget you’re pedaling a 180mm coil-equipped bike.
The 2024 Slayer is the biggest bike in our rental fleet. If your riding priorities are big hucks, Rampage lines, shuttle rides and ski lifts, the 2024 Rocky Mountain Slayer was made for you. It’s also an excellent mesa bike if you’re more into playing around on the slickrock than knocking out lots of miles. If the Slayer sounds fun but you really like to pedal, take a look at the Rocky Mountain Altitude, Rocky’s 160mm enduro bike.
*Cush Core tire inserts and PenaltyBox frame storage are only included with the carbon models.
