SW Slovenia – Day 4

Posted on

Our second day in Slovenia and another mountain to climb. This time we drive a few hours south to an area near the Adriatic and the Italian border. Another ride, another mountain to climb and another great day.

This is getting to be addicting; we park in a really cool little town settled in early roman times maybe and inhabitad by 50 people or so. We park right in town and get ready to ride; within a block we are on gravel and soon we are climbing again. It’s a bit warm today and the usual Slovenian 100% humidity is in the air. Hey, it’s why we have small chainrings right? We climb for an hour again almost all in the little gear. It’s 100 degrees almost at the base but a bit better at the summit overlooking the Adriatic and Italy and Croatia. As we’ve learned of the secret Slovenian Sick Singletrack; when we get to descend is when the payout becomes well more than that invested. Today I have no pictures; we sweated for an hour plus and reached views all over the region…

Then right from the very summit we begin our rippin’ descent. For nearly an hour we descended with full on ”Oh my friggin’ Gawd” type of laughter and speed. It was like the descending Holy Cross, but for 2500 feet with some Prime cut fast flowing track inserted for our entertainmant pleasure. Pleasure it was; like something I had never expected here and up there with anything I have ever ridden anywhere… and that’s a few places… wow again, and we’re getting used to that word. After rock garden singletrack that went on and on like some scene from my wierdest MTB dream, we suddenly pop back into our little town and a few urban jumps off stuff thats really old and we are back at the car… life here is pretty good!

Now we had to drive all the way across half of Slovenia to our next town, Ljubijana… that would take a whole hour… It’s a pretty small country filled with great lanscapes and an abundance of history spanning all the way back to the Greeks and Romans. Check out tomorrow and our time in Ljubljana Slovenia
