Single Speed Nationals!

Melrose will be hosting its first mountain bike nationals event, and it’s a goodie! The Single Speed National Championships, where racing is secondary to shenanigans and carbo loading comes in a bottle. Single speed racing is less about fitness and preparation, more about character, costume and of course cogs! Mad May in Melrose kicks off the 5th through 7th with the Single Speed Nationals held in conjunction with the Burning Bike Festival; a bicycle-fueled weekend of outfits, campfires and music. This is closely followed by a visit from the Bicycle SA “Outback Odyssey”; an overland mountain bike journey of 950-odd km from Adelaide to Blinman on the Mawson Trail. By May’s end we will being making preparations for the Melrose Fat Tyre Festival slated for the long 9th through 12th of June. This year’s festival is themed RECYCLE and is supported by South Australian Tourism Commission – learning how we can […]

What Did You Get For Christmas?

What Did You Get For Christmas? Hurricane got 5 new miles of purpose built mountain bike trail in the Quail Lake Reservoir area, bringing the total to 19 miles thus far. OTE Hurricane has been designing and building trail in this area for 5 years and has created a master plan for the entire area. OTE Hurricane took on the project when Doug Wilson, an acquaintance of ours from the Water Conservancy District (WCD), contacted us and needed someone to design and build trails in the area around Quail Lake Reservoir. In order to meet the requirements that the  Bureau of Land Management (BLM) set forth in the RMP, recreation trails needed to be built to keep the land permanently deeded to the WCD. Rhythm & Blues was the first trail to be built with volunteers. This trail comes at you fast. So put your saddle down and be ready […]

One of the coolest mountain bike rides in Tahoe

One of the coolest mountain bike rides you can do in South Lake Tahoe is to head up to Freel Pass! This is the one of highest point on the Tahoe Rim Trail and offers some amazing views and amazing trail! Here is a couple of ways of getting there: Start at our shop and use our mountain bike shuttle service. For $10 we can shuttle you and your bike up to Stage Coach Lodge, from there you can head south on the Tahoe Rim Trail all the way to Freel Pass. Take a dip, eat your snacks, and enjoy this serene alpine gem of a lake. Then about 3 more miles take you up another 700 feet to Freel Pass…thats it …….then…. […]

Sedona Trail Stoke! Our Favorites

I recently read an article in Peleton magazine titled, “My Favorite Roads.”  The author went on to write about some the roads he’s ridden around the world that have left lasting memories for him and capture the essence of riding a road bike.  The article inspired me to do something very similar, but to write about some of my favorite trails here in this adventureland. HiLine This trail challenges me every time I ride it.  The first climb warms up my lungs and I am greeted by a view of the ridge on the other side of this small valley, Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte.  I can’t look away for too long because the trail is narrow and the exposure to my right has its consequences.  My concentration is tested all the way along the ridge to the view point, where I take a dog-leg right turn and descend down […]

South Lake Tahoe Trail Report: Trails in South Tahoe are melting out rapidly!! Its mountain bike season! Corral Trail is open all the way up and down, no trees, no mud, just awesome. Armstrong Connector is also open and snow free. However the upper flat portion is not quite ready. Sidewinder is running like summer with only a tree or two in the way. Cold Creek Trail is open and clear all the way up to the lower rock slab (mid way point where trail is closest to road) Van Sickle is clear well over a third of the way up from the bottom Tahoe Mountain is also clear and dry. Melrose Riding Adventures

‘The hills don’t seem as steep or as daunting as they did on my first ride,’ I think to myself as I shift my ass to the nose of my saddle, swat flies from my face and keep my eyes on the crest of the hill.  The climbs here are longer than what I am used to.  The first day that I rode, I huffed and I puffed my way up the hills and even had to walk up part of one.  Two weeks later now and I find those same climbs to be fun for their terrain transitions from dirt up onto a rock ledge and different turns as they wind their way through the farm land. The narrow tracks here demand my attention at all times.  There have been many moments where my wheels have strayed from the dirt onto the long grasses that flank these tracks and […]
