2024 Rocky Mountain Instinct Description

The 2024 Rocky Mountain Instinct is everything you loved about the Instinct but lighter, plusher and even more of an all-mountain weapon. Designed for, “total trail bike versatility,” the new Instinct has 140mm of Smoothlink suspension in the rear, a 150mm fork, and geometry that’s as comfortable climbing as it is shredding the DH. It’s perfect for the rider who doesn’t want uphills or downhills to define their terrain or riding style.

The Instinct has always been a great-pedaling trail bike. Thanks to a diet, the 2024 Rocky Mountain Instinct is even better. For uphill grinds and backcountry suffer-fests the new carbon Instinct is 200 grams lighter than its predecessor. Translation for Americans – that’s almost half-a-pound lighter. Or, more than half a bag of string cheese; which you can carry in the new PenaltyBox downtube compartment, a.k.a. the on-board cheese storage box.

to Rocky’s Ride-4 System, a reach-adjustable headset and a flip chip at the rear axle, the 2024 Instinct’s geometry is extremely customizable. Even the most meticulous setup snobs will be able to choose a headtube angle, suspension feel and bottom bracket height that suits them best. According to NSMB’s 2024 Rocky Mountain Instinct review, there are 48 possible geometry configurations to choose from.

The new Instinct’s geometry is considerably longer and slacker. It varies depending on the Ride-4 setting but the headtube angle is generally about a degree-and-half slacker than the old Instinct. On the slack end of things, it has a 63.5° headtube angle. If you prefer a quicker-handling bike, the Instinct’s headtube angle is 64.3° in Ride-4 Position 4. The wheelbase is nearly an inch longer (20mm on a medium). Combined with the enduro-slack headtube angle, it’s a very comfortable, stable ride that makes the bike a good choice for most Hurricane/Zion-area mesa trails.

Rocky Mountain has used their four-bar Smoothlink suspension system (Rocky’s take on the popular Horst Link) on most of their bikes, through the years. It’s a very active, highly-tunable linkage that gives the 2024 Instinct phenomenal small bump compliance and excellent traction. Paired with the updated, enduro-inspired geometry, the Smoothlink suspension makes the Instinct a gas on the descents.
