Revel Rascal Description
The Revel Rascal is a 130mm-travel 29er trail bike. Revel is a new brand and you might be wondering what sets their mountain bikes apart from established bike makers. That’s why we’re here! We do the research and pick what we believe are the best mountain bikes on the market and make them available to you in our rental bike fleet. Keep reading to learn why the Revel Rascal 29er has earned a coveted spot on the OTE, Hurricane shop floor.
We were first introduced to Revel Bikes at the 2019 Hurricane MTB Festival. It was one of their first public events and there was a lot of hype about the bikes. It was nearly impossible to get a demo bike because they were in such high demand. Luckily, the Revel crew stuck around for a few days after the festival and we got a chance to try the bikes out. We were impressed with the ride and are proud to include them in our lineup, now.
So – what makes the Revel Rascal 29er special? First and foremost, it’s the suspension. Revel invested in the Canfield Balance Formula suspension (CBF). CBF is a patented system from Chris Canfield of the Canfield brothers, best known for their Rampage-focused gravity bikes. It’s a very active system that separates pedaling and braking forces from the suspension so it never locks out – it’s always moving. This gives the Rascal great traction for cornering and climbing and feels suuuuper smooth rolling over chunky stuff. It never gets hung up on square edges when you’re pedaling or descending. The active suspension adds confidence on technical climbs and lets you open it up on the descents since you know hard braking won’t lock it up and toss you over the bars. Combine the smoothness of the CBF suspension with the Rascal’s 29er wheels and you’ve got a bike that’s ready for Hurricane slickrock and beyond.
Complementing the Rascal’s buttery suspension is their somewhat surprising take on 29er trail bike geometry. The current trend is longer bikes with extended reach. The Rascal has a long wheelbase for a trail bike but the cockpit is actually a bit on the short side compared to most mid-travel bikes. With a low bottom bracket and relatively slack (for a 29er trail bike) 66° head angle, it’s a very stable, comfortable ride – especially at speed. If you ride trails with tight switchbacks, not to worry – short chainstays keep the Rascal quick and flickable when you want it to be. Overall, the Rascal is a very balanced, intuitive bike that just seems to go where you want it to go without a lot of thought or effort.
Finally – let’s talk about that beautiful carbon frame. Revel offers three color options for the Rascal 29er: Alaska (navy and gold), Ansel Adams (black and white) and the hotness you see here – T1000, a silky silver finish named after the robot assassin in the original Terminator movie. Underneath that sexy silver is a carbon frame with a special carbon layup spec’d by Enve founder, Jason Schiers. Rather than using industry standard 0°, 45° and 90° carbon fiber, the Rascal frame uses more 30/60° fiber for a tougher, stiffer and lighter construction. The attention to detail is notable. Besides the smooth finish, there’s also an integrated chain guide and the easiest-to-use internal cable guides in the business.
We’re really excited about Revel Bikes and the Rascal 29er. It definitely has its own flavor and fits a different niche than other short and mid-travel 29ers. Bike Magazine put it well in their 2019 Bible of Bikes Tests Revel Rascal video review: “This is not an all-mountain bike or an XC bike. It’s right in the middle.” It handles like a small bike when you need it to; but when the trail gets fast and chunky, the Rascal’s long wheelbase, slack head angle and CBF suspension encourage you to open it up and let it run. It seems to float effortlessly through almost anything. Jem Trail laps, Gooseberry slickrock or low-speed chunky tech on the Boy Scout Trails – the Revel Rascal 29er handles it all with quiet, inspiring confidence.
