Pivot Trailcat Description

As the replacement for the Pivot Trail 429, one of Pivot’s most successful mountain bikes, the new Trailcat has big shoes to fill. The Pivot Trailcat comes in two versions that use the same frame with different shock lengths, mounts and links – the “Superlight” 120mm Trailcat SL and the long-travel 135mm Trailcat LT. They’re both versatile, capable trail bikes that pedal great, thanks to the DW-Link suspension. The main differences are geometry and suspension. The Trailcat SL has a 140mm Fox 34 fork with geometry and suspension tuned for responsiveness. The Trailcat LT has a 150mm Fox 36 fork, a higher-volume Fox Float X rear shock, and longer, slacker geometry so you can open it up in the descents.

The Trailcat comes standard as a 29er but it’s mixed-wheel compatible, thanks to a flip-chip on the upper shock link (the extra small is only available as a mixed-wheel bike). With the standard 29er setup, the Trailcat’s flip-chip offers Low and High settings with half-a-degree of geometry adjustment. The Trailcat also features Pivot’s new Tool Shed internal frame storage.

While both versions of the Pivot Trailcat are great rides, we currently carry the Trailcat SL in our rental fleet. It’s a lightweight, fantastic-pedaling bike with geometry that’s comfortable and confident on almost any trail. Pivot designed the Trailcat with size-specific carbon tubing and chainstays. Whether you’re petite, lanky or somewhere in-between, the Pivot Trailcat is quick, stable and fun.

Anyone looking for an efficient, short-travel trail bike should take a close look at the Pivot Trailcat SL. Here in Southern Utah, it’s an excellent choice for the JEM trail system or longer, medium-tech mesa rides. If you’re a beginning, intermediate or cross-country mountain biker, the Trailcat SL should be a perfect fit. Riders that want to do more technical trails with bigger moves might consider a longer-travel bike. We don’t carry the Trailcat LT in our rental fleet* but we do have the Pivot Switchblade, a 142mm-travel all-mountain trail bike. Another option is the Ibis Ripley, another DW-Link trail bike with 130mm of travel and longer, slacker geometry.

*If you’d like to buy a Pivot Trailcat LT, we’d love to order one for you. The only reason we don’t stock the Trailcat LT is the travel and geometry are so similar to the Pivot Switchblade.
