Pivot Mach 5.5 Description
The Pivot Mach 5.5 is probably the most overlooked and underestimated bike in our lineup. Strike that – the most overlooked bike in the industry! Right now, if it isn’t a featherweight XC bike, if it doesn’t have big wheels or 180mm of travel, no one cares. However, the Pivot Mach 5.5 is one of the most capable, versatile and fun trail bikes we carry. With 140mm of rear wheel travel, 160mm up front, 27.5 wheels equipped with meaty 2.6 rubber and carefully calculated geometry, the Pivot Mach 5.5 deftly splits the difference between a trail bike and an enduro rig. There’s almost nothing the Mach 5.5 can’t handle. This gets said way too much, but – if you want one bike that can really handle everything in the Hurricane trail portfolio, the Pivot Mach 5.5 is it.
The formula for the Mach 5.5’s scrappy versatility is threefold – geometry, suspension and tires. The reverse mullet suspension is 140mm of DW Link business in the back and 160mm of Fox 36 gravity party in the front. Do a careful geometry comparison and you’ll find the Mach 5.5 falls between enduro and trail bike territory. It’s an incredibly balanced and intuitive bike that’s as nearly as comfortable climbing as it is descending.
No one’s going to confuse the Mach 5.5 with a cross-country race bike. But it’s no slouch when you’re pedaling, either. Comfort and traction are not a problem. The 74.25° seat tube angle and DW Link rear suspension make it easy to sit, spin and keep things moving forward. When the climb gets steeper and rockier, the 66.5° head angle is a good compromise, helping keep the front wheel on the ground and allowing you to easily maneuver the bike up, over and around obstacles. Whether you’re spinning up Dead Ringer in the JEM trail system or finessing technical slickrock on Gooseberry Mesa, the Mach 5.5 has what it takes.
The Mach 5.5’s 2.6-inch Maxxis tires will surprise a lot of people. With lower pressure and more rubber on the trail, there’s a noticeable traction improvement and a smoother ride, uphill and down. They’re especially good on loose, rocky trails. There seems to be little or no downside, even when compared to 2.3 or 2.4 tires you’d expect to be faster and more efficient. The 2.6 Maxxis rubber makes the Mach 5.5 more stable, confident and fun on any kind of trail. What’s not to love?
We wouldn’t be doing our job if we didn’t say a few words about the Pivot Mach 5.5’s DW Link suspension. Designed by suspension genius Dave Weigel, the DW Link is one of the most loved and respected mountain bike linkage systems. Mr. Weigel has designed a whole bunch of suspension systems but the DW Link is undoubtedly his most popular design. The reason? The DW Link is versatile, customizable and it does what it’s supposed to; it provides a smooth controlled ride in the rough and efficient pedaling on all kinds of trail surfaces. The Pivot Mach 5.5’s suspension feels a tad plusher than previous Pivot mountain bikes. The Mach 5.5 still pedals just as well as its predecessors, the Mach 6 and Mach 5.7. But it takes the edge off square-edged hits a little better than those bikes did – especially when you’re pedaling.
If you really want one bike to do it all, you’re not gonna do any better than the Pivot Mach 5.5. Different strokes for different folks and all that, but a 27.5 trail bike that’s just as much fun pedaling Hurricane Rim as it is on Grafton Mesa? The Mach 5.5 is your ride. We wouldn’t recommend it for a cross-country race or Red Bull Rampage. But for most anything in between, the Pivot Mach 5.5 will get ‘er done and leave you smiling!
