2024 Rocky Mountain Altitude Description
The Rocky Mountain Altitude has been in our lineup for about as long as we’ve been in business. We’ve watched it evolve from a long-travel 26-inch trail bike to the accomplished World Cup enduro race rig it is now. The 2024 Rocky Mountain Altitude has the same 160mm travel and 29er wheels (27.5 for small) but pretty much everything else is different. It’s slacker, longer and has a much plusher ride feel. Whereas the previous Altitude was more of a long-travel trail bike, the 2024 Altitude is a 100% current gravity-focused enduro sled. It still pedals well but a quick ride makes it clear the new Altitude is all about the descent.
The new Altitude looks different – very different. That’s because Rocky changed the linkage from their standard Smoothlink, a variation of the Horst Link suspension, to their LC2R system (Low Centre Counter Rotating). Introduced with the 2006 Rocky Mountain Slayer, LC2R is Rocky’s own, patented version of the VPP suspension concept. The LC2R suspension centers and lowers the linkage, giving the bike a lower center of gravity. Thanks to LC2R, the 2024 Rocky Altitude has a much smoother, plusher ride than the previous Altitude. It feels velvety at the top of the stroke and really soaks up big hits. It’s very confidence-inspiring on big slickrock rollers and drops. Read more about the LC2R suspension, here.
The 2024 Altitude has slacker, more gravity-friendly geometry with size-tuned frames and size-specific chainstay lengths. Rocky’s Ride-4 system lets you adjust the geometry to your own taste and it there’s a reach-adjust headset so you can refine the fit. In the slack position, the new Altitude is almost a degree-and-a-half slacker than the previous bike and the wheelbase is over an inch longer (30mm on a medium). Combine the new geometry with the plusher suspension and you’ve got a bike that will have you looking for steeper, nastier lines.
Although it’s not quite the efficient pedaler the previous Altitude was, the 2024 Rocky Mountain Altitude pedals quite well – especially considering how smooth it is on the descents. The plusher suspension also means better traction on technical climbs. If you’ve got the power to keep it moving, it floats right up steppy terrain. And Southern Utah has plenty of chunky climbs.
Last but certainly not least, carbon 2024 Altitudes get Rocky’s latest, PenaltyBox 2.0 downtube storage. The PenaltyBox has a hinged door with water bottle mounts, comes with a custom tool wrap and there’s a hidden AirTag/Tile compartment. We aren’t sure how much poutine or maple syrup the PenaltyBox holds but Rocky says it has, “generous capacity.”
The 2024 Rocky Mountain Altitude is available in carbon and aluminum and we carry both in our rental fleet. The Altitude comes standard as a 29er except for size small, which comes with 27.5 wheels. For riders who prefer a more playful ride, medium to XL sizes are also available with a mixed wheel/mullet setup. The 2024 Altitude is one of the plushest, most aggressive bikes in our current lineup. If you’re looking for a shuttle/park rig that’s comfortable on technical slickrock, the old Rampage site and Flying Monkey, the 2024 Altitude is a great choice. If you’d like to compare it to other bikes in our lineup, take a look at the Rocky Mountain Slayer, Knolly Chilcotin and Ibis HD6.
